The Masters Speak eBook Jose Fraguas Reviews

This book contains interviews with 25 leading martial arts masters, spanning a range of disciplines. The back cover claims that the interviews are "deep" and give readers "a deeper understanding of martial arts as a whole, and help them along the path of higher consciousness." In retrospect, this is laughable, of course, but I did expect something a little more substancial than questions like "when did you start training and why?"

Because there are interviews with 25 martial artists in this book, the first few questions in each interview are small talk, and each interview concludes with the unhelpful photographs of techniques that you find in so many books, there is precious little room for the 'deep' questions the cover promised. In addition, one of the unifying themes expoused by the masters is that of humility, yet each interview/chapter has a cheesy subtitle along the lines of "The Snow Tiger Roars" and "The Ultimate Warrior". It makes one wonder if the author really understood what the masters were trying to say. Another reviewer has noted the typos and other errors in the book. I find it truly disturbing that a book about martial arts -- a discipline in which practioners dedicate themselves for decades to striving towards perfection -- has clearly not even been proofread.

Okay, that's what's bad about the book. What about the good points? It does cover a range of martial arts, although it has heavily weighted towards karate, kickboxing, muay thai, aikido, and escrima. Some of the stories are interesting, such as an escrima master studying under the blind princess of a remote tribe. And it's always interesting to learn how other instructors teach their students.

Overall, the book is a disappointment. I am, however, willing to accept that the fault is mine for having unrealistic expectations. My advice to potential buyers is to consider this book a collection of short, lightweight interviews with a variety of martial artists. If that is all you want -- and typos don't bother you -- then you may find the book enjoyable.
